Intelligent indoor climate: fresh air for a healthy home
The most important thing for a pleasant indoor climate is an optimized ventilation strategy. Exchanging indoor air for fresh outdoor air not only changes the temperature in the house. Humidity, oxygen content and dust levels can also be improved by changing the air. However, in order to achieve optimum air quality, it is necessary to follow some advice and adapt the ventilation behavior to the respective season. Otherwise, in the worst case scenario, you could bring mold into your home and endanger your health.
How do you ventilate properly?
If you spend a lot of time in a room with the window closed, the air in the room is enriched by your breath. This is naturally warmer, more humid and poorer in oxygen than the fresh air outside. When you open the windows, the stale air leaves the house and is replaced by fresh air. Ventilation therefore fulfills several functions: It provides oxygen-rich air and lowers the temperature and humidity. At least that's the idea. To ensure that ventilation actually leads to an improvement in air quality, a few things need to be taken into account in some cases.
A common ventilation trap is to open the windows just a crack and leave them tilted for a long time.
By tilting the windows, the air exchange is very low, which means that the room is insufficiently ventilated. As a result, heating costs increase and a good indoor climate is not achieved.
Correct ventilation is achieved by intermittent ventilation:
- Open the windows wide so that the air can circulate freely. Draw the curtains to the side and open the interior doors to maximize the effect. The more effective the air exchange is, the sooner you can close the windows again.
- The aim is to achieve a high level of air exchange in a short time without cooling the walls and surfaces too much.
- It is best to open several windows wide at the same time for a short time to maximize the effect.
- The exchange of air is much greater, especially if windows on opposite sides of the building are opened at the same time (draught).
In the cool season, depending on the temperature and wind, it is sufficient to ventilate two to three times a day for around 5 minutes per room with the window wide open.
On hot days, ventilation should generally be slightly longer (between 10 and 20 minutes per airing, depending on the temperature and wind) in order to achieve sufficient air exchange. This is because air exchange is slower when the temperature inside and outside the house is roughly the same.
Bedroom
It's best to ventilate the bedrooms thoroughly with windows wide open before going to bed and in the morning after waking up. The door to cooler bedrooms should always remain closed, as warmer (and thus more humid) air from other rooms quickly leads to condensation and mold formation on cold surfaces. Often, exterior walls, room corners, or areas behind and under the bed as well as behind heavy furniture are affected. If possible and desired, you should keep the windows slightly open or fully open at night. This allows for the greatest exchange of air. However, this may not be everyone's preference, especially in winter. Otherwise, after waking up, thorough ventilation with windows wide open is recommended.
